Split stitch is ideal for outlining shapes and useful when making a layer of stitches for padded satin stitch. It's can be worked in 1 or 2 strands of thread - cotton or silk.

Bring the needle up from the back between the two strands as shown, or in the case of one strand of thread, come up from the back inserting the needle between the thread fibres.

Here's an example where I used two strands of thread...
