Blog > Long and short stitch

Long and short stitch   This is a good filling stitch. Work with one strand of thread for the best results. When working large areas with two strands, separate the threads before inserting them in the needle. This way, the threads are smooth and untwisted.   Click on the images to enlarge

When filling in large areas such as a thatch roof, it is best to make longer stitches: 2 or 2 ½ cm (1 inch) in length.

When starting at a sharp point, use radiating stitches of random length, fanning the stitches outwards to accommodate the shape. Keep going back between the previous stitches as you fill in the shape.
