Blog > How to Make a Lisianthus Flower (or Rose Bud) in Silk Ribbon - by Di van Niekerk

These white flowers do add to the beauty of this ribbon embroidery arrangement, don’t you think? Lisianthus, also called Texas bluebellprairie rose or prairie gentian, is valued for its vibrant colours and attractive blooms.

Here is a short tutorial about how to create this lovely flower. I used this technique for my popular Box Full of Lessons  (number 13 in the series) and here’s an extract on how to make a Lisianthus flower, or a Rosebud which is a similar shape. Enjoy!

Make the  White Lisianthus

.

.

  • Use a matching thread and make a knot at the long end. Cut a 25cm (10 inch) length of ribbon.

.

.

  • Roll up one end for about 10 cm (4 inches); use tiny stab stitches along the base of the roll to hold the shape.
  • With the same thread, make small running stitches along the one edge of the ribbon until you reach the end.
  • Pull the thread softly to gather the ribbon a little and then, roll the gathered ribbon up to form a rose-like shape.
  • Use the same thread and, with a gentle tension and tiny stab stitches, secure the folds along the base to hold the shape.
  • .

.

.

  • Place the Lisianthus on your background and secure along the base of the flower with tiny stab stitches, working through all the layers. Use several stab stitches to secure it well.

Hint: You can also catch sections further up on the rolled-up flower  with small stitches if it is too loose on the design.

Make the green calyxes

.

.

.

  • Using the same ribbon, make a loop stitch. Then take the needle to the back of your work.

,

  • Apply glue from a glue stick onto a spare needle. (This glue is like the glue stick the children use at school.)

  • Insert the gluey needle into the loop. Remove the needle leaving the glue behind and flatten the ribbon between your fingertips.

.

  • Make another Straight stitch across the base to support the loop as shown.

.

I hope you enjoyed this short tutorial. These Lisianthus flowers are ideal way to embellish a wedding gown or veil or use to add a stylish bouquet on a cap or hat. Can also be used to make fabric flowers on a stem or use the flowers in between your other flowers on an embroidered piece.
